Concurrent with the exhibition “Architecture Books – Yet to Be Written” at Storefront for Art and Architecture, 24x24x24 was an independent program centered around the design of seating that took place on the 2018 summer solstice with a series of public performances. The seats then remained as the furniture supporting the exhibit.
A 24 hour long marathon of events, the program included 24 architects and designers who created 24 stools that provide an antidote to over polished, hyper refined, hyperbolic, and expensive design. An opportunity to connect, propose, and engage diverse architectural interests, designers hosted an hour of programming in conjunction with their stool during the longest day of the year. From dawn to dusk participants experimented in the collective production of thinking, design, and action.
Designed for the 24x24x24 program, Step/Stool is an exploration of multipurpose architectural furniture. Utilizing readymade objects to form a ziggurat, the piece is designed to be repositioned—alternating between a bench, high stool, stair, or book wedge depending on its orientation.
The design functions as both a functional art piece and a pedestal for debate, echoing the themes of the concurrent Storefront Library exhibition. By reimagining everyday components into a singular, sculptural form, Step/Stool invites public discussion on how we interact with, honor, and display the artifacts of our cultural narrative.
